A minimum of 12 premium medical institutes in India including the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) is involved in the development of Covaxin.

Mr.Balram Bhargava, who is the director general of the of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), on briefed to medical research groups said that it is expected to announce the covid 19 vaccine by 15th August 2020 after successful completion of all clinical trials. Mr. Bhargava also mentioned that the vaccine development project was being closely  monitored at the “topmost level of the government”.

However, when will the Covid19 Vaccine from India be available for public? The answer for this can be a bit complicated.

There are more than 200 vaccine manufacturing agencies trying to develop Covid vaccine across the world. The Covid Vaccine development is progressing at unprecedented pace. As part of the global race to develop a safe vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 commonly called the Covid virus, the Indian researchers has started testing the nation’s first indigenous developed corona virus vaccine name as the COVAXIN. The test is initially conducted on 1,100 candidates and this will have two phases. the phase 1 and 2 clinical trials.

The Covid19 Vaccine from India Developed by the Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR) also getting inputs and research from the National Institute of Virology (NIV). The vaccine in the experimental phase is an inactivated vaccine developed from a strain of SARS-COV-2 active virus specifically isolated by ICMR-NIV located in Pune. The vaccine branded as COVAXIN has displayed safety and excellent immune response in humans in the initial pre-clinical studies.

As per the suggestion from a senior researcher at the ICMR, about 254 therapies and as many as 95 covid vaccines to treat and prevent Covid-19 are being researched on now globally. Out of this, less than 10% gets approval from the FDA. This means that even upon getting approval on clinical trials, the vaccine is still in trial mode all over the world. The entire process of covid vaccine approval by FDA and marketing the same for effective public distribution will be hence almost impossible before August 2021.

In the mean time CPI (M) leader Mr.Sitaram Yetchury came with an allegation that the government is ordering ICMR to launch the vaccine by August 15. Many political observers have made remarks that the remark by Mr. Yetchury’s statement was highly political in nature and that the already miserable political position of  his party is the reason for making allegations against the union Government.
