People who reside in valleys next to steep hills, and people who stay on slopes of hills need to take extra care during continuous heavy rain. Take extra precaution if the place where you live is in a span of two kilometres from a recent landslide site. In Idukki and Kannur districts of Kerala a phenomenon called soil piping was also seen in many areas. This is a phenomenon in which land suddenly goes down, deep into the earth forming a crater like hole. This happens due to disturbances in the lower layers of the hard soil.
